Tracks

(2013) 113 minutes

In 1977, Robyn Davidson moved to Alice Spring in the heart of the Australian Outback. There she worked with camels with the idea of riding them 1700 miles west across the desert to the Indian Ocean. Davidson craved solitude, but to finance her trek she had to agree to let National Geographic document her journey, meeting intermittently with photographer Rick Smolan. Their collaboration was at turns fraught and cathartic, as her passage would prove to be grueling and sublime in ways the magazine article could never convey.

In this film by John Curran, Mia Wasikowska plays a brooding Davidson to Adam Driver’s earnest Smolan, both of whom shine as two souls crossing life-paths on a forbidding landscape.

Please Note--This film is RATED PG-13, with drinking, profanity, sexuality, semi-nudity, violence and death involving animals, harassment by tourists and dirtbags on dirtbikes, and one very long walk to the ocean.
