The Philadelphia Story (1940) 112 minutes

It is no overstatement to say that this film is the definitive Katharine Hepburn movie. It was based on a Phillip Barry play written specifically for Hepburn with the idea that it would become a film. Hepburn needed a hit film to put her back in the good graces of Hollywood, where she had been labeled as “Box Office Poison.” In the process, she delivered a spot-on performance as the bristling, independent-minded patrician––essentially playing herself opposite Cary Grant and Jimmy Stewart in their own breakout roles.

The result is one of Metro Goldwyn Mayer’s best movies, and if there are a few scenes that haven’t aged well, they are eclipsed by Hepburn, Grant and Stewart’s contagious banter and George Cukor’s superb direction.

BE ADVISED- This film is UNRATED, with smoking, drinking, sexual innuendo, problematic comedic violence, classism, and lots of hangovers.
