BRIGHT STAR (2009) 119 minutes
Like so many of the Romantic poets, John Keats lived a very short life. He was initially trained as a surgeon’s assistant, but his literary ambitions made it increasingly difficult to balance his respectable medical career with his growing desire to write––especially after his first published work received favorable notice. Bright Star is set in 1818 and reflects the period when Keats met Fanny Brawne, a passionate woman who became his muse. Ben Whishaw and Abbie Cornish play John Keats and Fanny Brawne, with equal measure of brooding intensity. Under the direction of New Zealand-born Jane Campion the film is an ode to the language of love.
BE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG, with smoking, drinking, profanity, sickness, mortality and full-blown Romantic Era passions.
