SAVING MR. BANKS (2013) 125 minutes

Here is a Disney film about Walt Disney, who once promised his daughter that he would make a film version of Mary Poppins. The 1964 musical was a major hit, but the process of adapting the beloved children’s book into a cinema classic was a fraught experience. The London-based author P.L. Travers had no desire to see a film made out of her books, especially one by Disney, who she saw as something of a hack. But Disney (as portrayed by Tom Hanks) was determined to acquire the rights, mounting a charm offensive to win over the flinty Englishwoman, played with a sharp edge by Emma Thompson. Fighting every step of the production, Travers proved to be a complicated soul, as her efforts to protect the integrity of her writing shrouded a hard upbringing on the Australian Outback.

BE ADVISED–– This film is rated PG-13, with smoking, drinking, mild profanity, attempted suicide, and California breeziness chafing against London reserve.
