Crossing Delancy
1988, 97 minutes
Directed by Joan Micklin Silver, this film stars Amy Irving as Isabelle Grossman, a woman set on a career path in New York’s literary world. Her grandmother in the Lower East Side (veteran Yiddish theater actor Reizl Bozyk), has other plans for Isabelle that involve a traditional matchmaker. When Isabelle is paired off with Peter Reigert’s pickle merchant, she is less than thrilled, seeing him as too plebian (and ethnic) compared to her rarefied circles. But tradition has a way of surprising, as Isabelle finds her third-generation experience has undeniable links to her grandmother’s world.
BE ADVISED--This film is rated PG, with smoking, drinking, slight nudity, big eighties hair and lots of kvetching in Ed Koch’s New York.
