We normally shoot landscape pictures with our feet on the ground. This conventional perspective has limitations. If you are fortunate to have a window seat on a cross country flight, you can enjoy a whole new perspective. Over the past 10 years, I’ve taken “aerial photographs” from window seats and shown them in several exhibits.

More recently, I’ve had the opportunity to explore drone photography, which offers yet another perspective. I’m constantly surprised and delighted at the transformed landscapes revealed from this birds-eye view. One sees a wide range of patterns and textures, both natural and manmade. Although many of the landscapes are recognizable, I’ve been especially drawn to the abstract patterns that are often revealed – patterns that were not anticipated from our conventional ground level perspective. These images often project a magical sense of mystery and ambiguity.

My drone images were captured with a DJI Mavic 2 drone from altitudes ranging from 50 to 400 feet. They were not taken in exotic locales. The venues have included farms, sand and gravel pits, victory gardens, parks, golf courses, ponds, seashores, and marshes.
