I am a collage artist from Arlington MA. Giving back to my community as co-Chair of Arts Arlington’s Community Engagement Committee and working on the growth of ArtLinks, a local arts networking group, allows me the opportunity to interact with our community and artists. I have contributed to a variety of public art and environmental projects and have been exhibiting my collage works in local and national shows for several years.
In this show, “Navigating Flight,” my mixed media collage work is created from vintage maps, books, and paper combinations, using a variety of reused materials. Audubon images are a favorite of mine. I find myself looking at ordinary images in a whole new way, seeing color and texture. When I look at a close-up image of the iris of an eye, for instance, I see the feathers of a bird. I use sections of maps as backgrounds, representing the potential habitat of the birds in each image. I think maps are a lost art, and I like to think beyond the GPS.
In a world where many everyday objects and books are tossed away or are underappreciated, it’s nice to find a way to reimagine them and give them new life.
